Auto Maintenance FAQs

How often should I get my oil changed?
Oil change intervals are not the same for all cars as it often depends on vehicle age, the type of oil and driving conditions. It used to be accepted practice to perform an oil change every 3,000 miles but modern lubricants have changed that. Today, many carmakers have recommended oil change intervals of 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Also, if your car requires full-synthetic oil, it could even go as far as 15,000 miles between services.
Do I need to charge my battery after I jump-start my vehicle?
To safely and properly recharge the batteries after jump-starting, they must be driven for 30 minutes (or you use a charger) before powering off or disconnecting them. Driving for this amount of time ensures that the alternator generates enough juice to recover from the drain caused by jump-starting your car.
How do I know when I need new brakes?
The first sign that your brake pads need changing is a noticeable squeaking sound coming from the wheel arches. This sound may be perfectly normal in wet weather conditions. However, if you notice this noise continually it is a sign that the brake pads have worn down and need replacing.
How Do I Know When To Replace My Tyres
To check the tyre, you simply need a 20p piece. Just place the coin in the tread grooves of the tyre. If the tread obscures the outer band of the 20p coin, then your tyre is above the legal limit. If it doesn’t, then your tyre is below the limit and you need to replace it. Each illegal tyre on your car is worth 3 penalty points if discovered, and it’s your responsibility to ensure that they’re replaced when necessary.
